Rivers 'cleaner than ever', DEFRA says

England's rivers and estuaries are "cleaner than at any other time on record", Environment Minister Elliot Morley claimed as the river quality data for 2002 were published. In fact, there has been little change in recent years, and the Environment Department and Environment Agency are stressing the need for further improvements in future.
