Alarm bells ring over safety of alkyl phenols
The Environment Agency has completed draft environmental risk assessments of octyl and dodecyl phenol - two chemicals closely related to nonyl phenol, which will shortly be banned by EU legislation in many applications because of its toxicity. Both compounds present similar or worse risks to the environment, the studies conclude - suggesting that both may also face restrictions in future.
