Sound science has its say on GM crops and biodiversity
The results of the four-year farm-scale evaluations (FSEs) comparing the biodiversity impacts of three conventional and GM herbicide-tolerant crops were published in October - and they were unexpectedly stunning. Confounding the biotechnology industry's assertions, they found consistent damage to arable flora and important insect populations from herbicide spraying regimes used with two of the GM crops - effects which would compound the depletion of farmland wildlife caused by conventional cropping over the past 50 years and run up against the Government's commitments on biodiversity.
