DEFRA procrastinates on waste acceptance rules
The waste industry and its customers face continued uncertainty as to the range of wastes that will be deemed acceptable in hazardous waste landfills following next July's ban on co-disposal. Official thinking has shifted towards that of the waste sector, which is pressing for uniform national controls rather than widespread site-specific assessments. But to the dismay of those poised to invest in new treatment capacity, the Environment Department's latest move on the issue - a consultation paper issued on 24 September1 - leaves Ministers with plenty of scope to amend their policy position in the months ahead.
