Offshore wind consents and grants

A further four offshore wind farms, with a combined capacity of over 450MW, received consent from the Department of Trade and Industry in October. Two are off Skegness, one off Cromer, and one off Clacton on Sea.

The DTI has also awarded capital grants to the four sites, together with sites in North Wales and Liverpool Bay which already had consents. Five of the grants were for £10 million, and the other was for £9 million.

Twelve of the original 18 sites in the first round of offshore development now have both consents and grants - which total £117 million.

Meanwhile, the UK's first sizeable offshore windfarm at North Hoyle in North Wales is expected to start generating before the end of the year (see pp 25-27 ).
