DTI backs 'clearing house' for WEEE collection

Proposals for an national clearing house to organise the collection of electrical appliances for recycling are included in a consultation paper from the Department of Trade and Industry on implementation of the EU Directives on waste electrical and electronic equipment and the restriction of hazardous substances in such equipment.1 Retailers would have to offer in-store take-back for appliances, or join a proposed retailer compliance scheme that would fund the provision of collection facilities. Councils would be encouraged - but not required - to provide collection facilities for WEEE.
