Councils' response on sustainable timber improves

Just over half of English local authorities are reviewing their timber procurement policies or are considering making plans to support the Government's commitment to buy timber from legal and sustainably managed sources, according to Environment Minister Elliot Morley.1

Of the 388 authorities in England, 209 responded to letters from former Environment Minister Michael Meacher sent in September 2002 and April 2003.

However, it is not known how many councils actually have sustainable timber purchasing policies. In February, it was revealed that just 46 English authorities had such policies in place (ENDS Report 337, p 39 ).
