The Mid-Sussex Water Company was fined £20,000 by Lewes Crown Court on 14 September after being found guilty of "culpable negligence" in allowing three drinking water boreholes to be contaminated with diesel oil. The incident occurred at Poverty Bottom in East Sussex last November, when an estimated 1,000 gallons of diesel leaked from a corroded pipe which was unprotected by any plastic sleeving. Water supplies to almost 100 homes
