Great Lakes Chemicals appears to have become the first firm to be prosecuted by a water company for an illegal discharge to sewer. In an action brought by Northumbrian Water, the chemical manufacturer was fined £500, with £200 costs, for an excessive bromine discharge from its site at Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham, in March.
