Paint industry calls for legislation to back low-solvent products

The British Coatings Federation (BCF) is calling on the Government to press for EC legislation to restrict the solvent content of decorative paints. The move is intended to halve emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paint use by 2000. The initiative echoes the packaging industry's recent successful call for legal backing to prevent "free riders" from escaping the costs of recycling - and throws up new questions about the relevance of the troubled EC eco-labelling scheme.
