Industry baulks at costs, disputes benefits of VOC controls

Claims from the industrial coatings and oil industries that the costs of controls on emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) outweigh the environmental benefits dominated hearings of the House of Commons Environment Committee in January. Both industries are pressing for a relaxation of existing or planned VOC controls - but were unable to explain how this could be reconciled with the much greater emission reductions that would be needed to meet health-based standards for air quality.
