Generators "switched off" FGD units
Both National Power and PowerGen have turned off flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment on power generating units while continuing to produce electricity, according to a parliamentary answer by Environment Minister Robert Atkins. The admission - which contradicts earlier statements by the generators and HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) - is likely to strengthen calls for tighter controls on the FGD programme.
