NRA resorts to waste law in water pollution prosecution

The National Rivers Authority (NRA) has used the waste provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for the first time to bring a prosecution against a Yorkshire chemical company over a toxic spillage which caused a major fish kill in the river Calder. The NRA's inquiries into the incident also tested its powers to obtain information from businesses.
