New water bug affects 20% of Scottish water supplies
Almost one in five water supplies in Scotland contains giardia, a parasite which causes chronic diarrhoea, a study for the Scottish Office has found.1 Only one waterborne outbreak of the disease has ever been reported in the UK, but the Scottish findings suggest that the organism may have been widely overlooked.
