New twists in the battle over chlorine
The battle over the future of the chlorine industry has entered a new phase, as regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have initiated studies of releases from chlorine manufacture and use. In Europe, the Paris Commission is limiting its actions to a study of PVC manufacture. But the joint US-Canadian Commission on the Great Lakes has repeated its call for a chlorine ban - and North American governments have responded with plans to assess the impact of chlorine use, promising prohibitions where necessary. The moves have incensed the chemical industry.
