Reform of Northern Ireland's water pollution laws

Proposals for the first significant reform of Northern Ireland's water legislation in more than 20 years have been issued by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland (DoE(NI)).1 They would bring the discharge consent system more closely into line with Britain's, introduce new pollution prevention powers, provide information on dischargers' compliance with their consents in public registers, and introduce charges to cover the authorities' costs in administering and policing compliance with discharge consents.
