  • HM Inspectorate of Pollution has delayed granting authorisation for the operation of Nuclear Electric's Sizewell B pressurised water reactor to allow further public consultation on the justification and need for the plant. HMIP's decision comes in the wake of the High Court ruling on British Nuclear Fuels' Thorp plant earlier this year that both the economic and environmental costs of nuclear plants must be evaluated before they are allowed to operate (ENDS Report 230, pp 43-44 ).
