  • Two local councils have formed a new private venture, the Coventry and Solihull Waste Disposal Company following competitive tendering for the area's waste disposal services. The firm, with a turnover of £8 million and 64 staff, will own the third largest waste-to-energy plant in the UK, with a capacity of 200,000 tonne/year. It is the first wholly owned local authority `waste-to-energy' company formed under the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act which states that authorities must contract out this service.
