Parties' contrasting visions of Europe and the environment

The Conservative Party's difficulties over Europe are reflected in the arid vision of the European Union's role in protecting the environment presented in its manifesto for the European elections. Labour and the Liberal Democrats, by contrast, foresee a need to work closely with the EU to protect the environment and achieve economic and social benefits in the process, although this sits uneasily with the Democrats' desire for decentralisation.
