Public concern for the environment rides the recession

The environment has remained high among the British public's concerns despite four years of recession, according a survey carried out for the Department of the Environment (DoE).1 Most people believe that the Government is not doing enough to protect the environment, and a clear majority favour action at EC level. The survey also reveals a pronounced increase in public support for the "polluter pays" principle even if this means higher prices for goods and services, as well as a continuing greening of personal choices and purchasing decisions.
