Nitrate zones to increase sewage sludge disposal costs

Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) proposed to protect waters from nitrate pollution will increase water companies' sludge disposal costs. At least one company will have to expand its sludge storage and processing capacity as land is closed for spreading for part of the year. And the industry may have to reckon with even tougher curbs on sludge disposal to some soils recommended by a study sponsored by the Department of the Environment (DoE).
