Developing nations want curbs on EC waste exports

The implications of the new global controls on shipments of hazardous waste agreed in March under the UN Basel Convention are continuing to unfold. Several developing countries have now announced that they do not wish to receive imports of waste even in the lowest hazard category from the EC, while several others - including five major importers - want tighter controls on such shipments which may be a forerunner of an import ban at the end of 1997.
