Dioxins from textiles pollute skin, sewage and rivers
A study by German scientists has presented the textile industry with a major environmental challenge by showing that cotton clothing containing high levels of dioxins may be a significant source of both human exposure and environmental contamination.1 The dioxins appear to stem from the use of the organochlorine preservative pentachlorophenol (PCP), and the discovery will increase pressure for a global phase-out of PCP from textile treatment.
