Appliance producers hamper EC plans forefficiency standards

Manufacturers of domestic appliances are stonewalling plans to set mandatory energy efficiency standards. An EC proposal on refrigerators has been held up for months by a battle within the European Commission, and many companies are refusing to co-operate in an official study of the energy efficiency of dishwashers, washing machines and driers. Meanwhile, a survey by the Consumers Association has revealed wide disparities in the energy efficiency of appliances on the market.
