New liability rules for oil pollution implemented

Owners of ships other than laden oil tankers will become strictly liable for oil pollution around the UK coast from 1 October. The new regime follows the Government's decision to bring promptly into force the liability provisions of the Merchant Shipping (Salvage and Pollution) Act 1994 after it received Royal Assent on 21 July.1
