Economic doubts over new outlets for waste glass

The amount of waste green glass collected may exceed recycling capacity in the UK within two years, a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) seminar heard on 27 August. Novel outlets, such as in road surfaces, foams and bricks, are technically feasible but, at present, economically unattractive. An alternative would be for bottlers and retailers to respecify the colour of glass they use so as to correct the imbalance between the amounts of green cullet collected and used in UK production.
