New campaign sparks row over oxygenates in petrol

A campaign has been launched to reduce traffic pollution by boosting the use of oxygenates in petrol. Sponsored by Arco Chemical Europe, a major oxygenates producer, the campaign is aimed at securing reduced duties on petrol containing oxygenates. However, oil companies are sceptical of the net environmental benefits of oxygenate substitution, and say that Arco is merely seeking European outlets for excess production capacity in the USA.
