MPs stoke controversy on benzene emissions from cars
The House of Commons' Transport Committee, impressed by evidence alleging a link between benzene emissions from vehicles and leukaemia, has called for a rapid phase-out of super unleaded petrol and a rethink on the use of standard unleaded petrol in cars without catalytic converters.1 The Committee has also demanded tougher enforcement of emission standards and a steep increase in the number of air quality monitoring sites - but has come under fire for failing to address the projected growth in traffic.
