IPC guides for iron and steel, ferrous foundries

HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) has published three guidance notes covering ferrous foundries and the production of iron and steel.1 The sector is the first for which HMIP has openly acknowledged that existing processes may not be expected to upgrade to standards achievable by new plant - and British Steel has already served notice that it will resist being pushed too hard towards new plant standards.

Operators of existing processes covered by the guidance will have to apply for authorisations under integrated pollution control between 1 January and 31 March 1995. They will then be expected to upgrade with "the objective of moving towards new plant standards", "generally no later than 31 March 2000" - an extension of 15 months to the deadline suggested in earlier drafts (ENDS Report 227, pp 30-32
