Ozone depletion meeting debates HCFCs, methyl bromide

A small step towards tighter controls on the ozone-depleting chemicals HCFCs and methyl bromide was taken at the sixth conference of parties to the Montreal Protocol in October. But developing countries remain reluctant to contemplate more stringent measures, and are also concerned about the implications of a previously agreed freeze on consumption of methyl bromide which comes into effect in January 1995, fearing that it may create barriers to trade in products treated with the pesticide.
