Phosphate industry's study backs eco-label campaign

Studies sponsored by phosphate producers have blamed toxic components of detergents rather than phosphate for promoting algal growth in fresh waters. The results are intended to put pressure on the European Commission to allow phosphate-based washing powders to receive eco-labels - but seem unlikely to alter the widespread belief that phosphate controls are needed to counter eutrophication.
