DoE firms up on VOC target - but blows cool on EC controls

New projections by the Department of the Environment suggest that the UK is on course to meet an international target to cut emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by 30% by 1999. Officials told the House of Commons Environment Committee in November that sizeable further cuts will nevertheless be needed to reduce ozone pollution episodes - but then, in a notable shift in approach, took issue with EC plans to control emissions from petrol distribution, vehicle refuelling and solvent use.
