Greenpeace wins concessions on ozone-benign refrigerants

Sainsbury's has backed down to a campaign by Greenpeace by announcing plans to investigate ozone-benign refrigerants with two other major retailers. The move has been welcomed by the Government, and may help to pave the way to new international curbs on the use of HCFCs.

Sainsbury's announcement was made at a forum on the ozone layer in January which the company had organised. It came three months after the retailer had objected violently to a campaign by Greenpeace against its use of HCFC-22 (ENDS Report 213, pp 11-12 ).

The HCFCs are regarded by many industries as important
