Water consumers back spending on environment

An opinion poll commissioned by the water industry regulator OFWAT has shown that water consumers rank the environment high on their list of priorities. The findings suggest that moves by water companies as well as OFWAT itself to seek a lower rate of increase in water bills at the expense of the environment are misguided.

First results from the poll were released by Chris Bolt, head of OFWAT's Charges Control Division, at an IBC conference in January. The poll was conducted by MORI following the publication of OFWAT's consultation paper on future water prices last August.

Mr Bolt admitted that he had found it "slightly surprising" that customers placed environmental issues such as sewage treatment standards so high in importance, second only to the safety
