New plastics sorting facility "most advanced yet"

A plastics sorting facility is to be built on Teesside as part of a new recycling scheme. Recoup, the industry's recycling consortium, hopes that the scheme will halve sorting costs and make plastics recycling cheaper than landfill.

Recoup, which now has 48 members, is involved in 36 of the UK's 38 plastic recycling schemes, having gradually taken over the operations of Recovery Plastics. It collected 2,150 tonnes of plastics from 720 banks and 175,000 households which are covered by kerbside schemes in 1992, compared with 1,300-1,400 tonnes in 1991 (ENDS Report 206, p 14
