HMIP's troubles with smokeless fuel plant continue

No resolution is yet in sight to the emission problems at a smokeless fuel plant near Coventry operated by Coal Products Ltd (CPL), despite a series of improvement notices from HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP). Meanwhile, HMIP's credibility with local residents has hit a new low following its withdrawal from the local liaison group.

HMIP has been struggling for some years to reduce the high particulate emissions from the incinerator stack at CPL's Homefire works. Last year, CPL complied with the requirements of an improvement notice by fitting a wet scrubber and two boiler systems with ceramic filters to its plant.
