UK paper manufacturers attack EC eco-label proposals

Formal proposals for eco-labelling criteria for toilet, kitchen, copying and writing paper have been finalised by the Danish authorities for submission to the European Commission. They have been greeted with alarm by many UK paper producers who fear that the scheme will erode their competitive position.

The paper products are among the initial batch of goods which the Commission wants to include in the formal launch of the EC's eco-labelling scheme in June.

Draft criteria for the four products were circulated by the Danes in January 1992, and were based on a combination of hurdles and points (ENDS Report 204, pp 25-26
