Controversy follows grant for newsprint recycling mill

The House of Commons gave its approval to a £20 million grant for a major newsprint recycling project in Kent on 26 January. But an unexpected Government decision to suspend the scheme under which the grant was awarded has put in jeopardy another newsprint recycling venture.

The £20 million grant has been given to SCA Aylesford, which is planning a £260 million investment to extend the capacity of its newsprint mill in Aylesford, Kent.

The site currently manufactures 80,000 tonnes of newsprint annually. All of this is made from waste fibre, although only 20% of the mill's input comprises post-consumer waste.

The £260 million investment will increase the mill's capacity to 355,000 tonnes
