Big hike in discharge fees

A 20% increase in the charges levied on dischargers by the National Rivers Authority (NRA) has been imposed for the second year in succession.

The charges were introduced in July 1991. They are the result of the Government's drive to ensure that the costs of operating pollution control regimes are met largely by those releasing wastes to the environment rather than by taxpayers.

The increase in the NRA's charges should come as no surprise because it was made clear more than a year ago that the Government wanted it to recover the full costs of administering the discharge consent
