EC rules set tighter limits on vehicle noise

The official text of a new EC Directive to curb noise emissions from vehicles is now available.1 Further legislation to reduce tyre noise is due to follow in the mid-1990s.

The legislation is the successor to a 1984 Directive which cut permitted noise emissions from new buses, coaches and lorries by almost half from 1989. The requirements of the new Directive are more modest, but are only the first of two stages which will achieve further noise reductions.
