Polluting tannery fined over missing application

A leather business has been fined £1,000 after failing to heed repeated warnings over an 18-month period about the need to apply for an authorisation under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The case was taken by South Somerset District Council against Wingrove & Edge, which operates a tannery in Milborne Port, Somerset. It was one of almost 50 prosecutions which had been initiated by local authorities by last autumn against firms which failed to submit applications for authorisation under the air pollution control system introduced by the Act.
