Water companies dominate prosecution league

Four of the ten worst water polluters in England and Wales are water companies, according to the latest prosecution data from the National Rivers Authority (NRA).

In November 1991, an ENDS league table of polluting businesses drawn from NRA prosecution data showed that British Coal was the worst offender (ENDS Report 202, p 6). The company had been prosecuted 30 times and clocked up £50,600 in fines to the end of August 1991.
