Small beginnings for household hazardous waste collection

The collection and potential reuse or recycling of household hazardous waste (HHW) has moved up the waste management agenda with the launch of the National Household Hazardous Waste Forum (NHHWF).

About 18,000 tonnes of hazardous household products such as paints, batteries, oil, and garden, household and motor chemicals are landfilled or incinerated each year, according to a report by Warren Spring Laboratory.1 A further 40,000 tonnes of oil from households are unaccounted for - either poured down the drains or onto soil, burned or stored.
