Washing machine producers queue up for eco-label

Washing machines and dishwashers have become the first product groups for which eco-labelling criteria have been agreed at EC level. With companies supplying the UK market already lining up to apply for the label, the signs are that eco-labelled washing machines may capture a larger share of sales than intended under the EC scheme - a development which will provoke questions about whether the criteria were set at a sufficiently high level.

The criteria were drafted by PA Consulting on behalf of the Government in 1991 (ENDS Report 200, pp 25-26) and almost finalised last May (ENDS Report 208, pp 27-28 ).
