Environmental assessment rules to be extended

The environmental assessment regime in England and Wales is to be extended by the withdrawal of permitted development rights for so-called Schedule 2 projects liable to have significant effects on the environment. Permitted development rights are also to be withdrawn for projects likely to have a significant effect on sites designated under EC nature protection legislation.

These changes to the scope of the environmental assessment regime were foreshadowed in an announcement by the Department of the Environment (DoE) in December (ENDS Report 216, pp 33-34 ).
