HMIP disappoints with power station authorisations
HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) has finally issued integrated pollution control (IPC) authorisations for National Power's and PowerGen's power stations. Hopes of a transparent decision-making process and a decisive move to reduce the generators' acid gas emissions have been frustrated. The main regulatory innovation after a two-year wait is a set of acid gas emission ceilings which appears unlikely to constrain the generators' operations, while decisions on the installation of abatement equipment have been delayed for another year.
