Critical review of LCA practice

Company-sponsored life-cycle analyses (LCAs) tend to favour the sponsor's material or product above competing products and do not necessarily represent the industry as a whole. These are among the findings of a study for the European Commission reviewing current LCA practice, and recommending best practice and research needs.1

The report was prepared for the Commission's Strategic Analysis in Science and Technology Unit (SAST) by the German Ecological Economics Research Institute. It forms part of a strategic analysis of technological innovations in the plastics industry and their influence on the environmental problems associated with plastics waste.

The study reviews 132 publicly available LCA studies. Half of these deal with packaging or packaging materials
