  • Browning Ferris Environmental Services has been granted planning permission to build a waste treatment plant in Newport, Gwent following an appeal to the Secretary of State for Wales. Newport Borough Council had opposed the company's original application. The plant, for the storage and non-thermal treatment of industrial wastes, will be the largest of its kind in the UK with an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes. Up to 40% of its throughput will be classed as special wastes.
