Chemical distributors sign up for Responsible Care

The chemical industry's "Responsible Care" initiative is to be extended to British distributors and traders of chemicals this autumn. The new programme will require member companies to carry out internal audits and implement action plans within three years. Improved communication of chemical hazards is also a feature of the initiative.

The British Chemical Distributors and Traders Association (BCDTA) announced its version of Responsible Care in May. The programme, comprising of eight broad principles, is due to be launched in October, by when most members are expected to have signed up.

Firms volunteering for the programme will have to appoint a Responsible Care co-ordinator with the authority to require relevant personnel to complete a self-assessment questionnaire. Th
