Guidelines for environmental purchasing policies

A code of practice on environmental purchasing practices is to be published by Business in the Environment (BiE) in June.1 The code puts forward seven guiding principles aimed at coordinating the multitude of often contrasting actions coming from business customers checking the environmental performance of suppliers and their products.

Buying goods, components and services which have a lower impact on the environment is a recent phenomenon for most businesses. Prominent among those who have acted are B&Q (ENDS Report 203, pp 12-15), British Telecom (ENDS Report 208, pp 22-24 ), IBM UK (ENDS Report 212, pp 19-22
